God of Joy

“As it is in Heaven”

The church in many cases seems to have lost sight of the God of Joy.  Think about your church or the churches as a nominal Christian, agnostic or even as an atheist that you visit from time to time.  When you walk over the doorstep, do the people you see in there exude joy or misery, or some emotion in between the two?

There are 242 references to joy in the NIV bible.  I believe the God of joy is not lost but misplaced! That’s not surprising though.  In a world lost and confused, seemingly like never before it’s a task to stay connected to Holy Spirit joy!  But let’s look at what scripture says and why it’s so important to do so.

Esther 9:22 New International Version (NIV)

“22 As the time when the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month when their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration. He wrote them to observe the days as days of feasting and joy and giving presents of food to one another and gifts to the poor.”

So, by the looks of things, in Esther’s day (In 478 B.C., Esther became the queen of Persia) they needed relief from their enemies who were “joy stealers” just like in our lives today. Let’s see how we can defeat the joy stealers of the modern age!

Notice in Esther 9:22 what pre-empts joy?  Its relief from their enemies and notice that it took a month for their sorrow to turn into joy!  Why a month?  Because forgiveness takes time!

Luke 20:43 New International Version (NIV)

“43 Until I make your enemies

    a footstool for your feet.”

Acts 7:49 New International Version (NIV)

49 “‘Heaven is my throne,

    and the earth is my footstool.

What kind of house will you build for me?

says the Lord.”

They say choose your enemy carefully, god says treat your enemy with care!

Your enemies can become a millstone around your neck or a footstool that launches you into God’s heavenly joy! It’s your choice, not theirs, but how?

The Jews got relief from their enemies,but it took a month for their sorrow to be turned into joy!

The indication that the Jews sorrow was caused by their enemies, is not I believe a reference to the persecution or battle of the moment of writing this scripture, but as a reference to God’s peoples’ perpetual refusal to walk in forgiveness.  You receive healing of your emotional wounds (we may tell ourselves we are completely healed up, but if any bitterness remains in our hearts it will be a barrier to joy) only when you forgive the perpetrator.

Don’t rush in!

So, it may take time.  I meet many people who recognise their source of emotional turbulence (an abusive parent, partner, or bully at school etc.) i.e. Enemy. Yet they display all the disruptive emotional patterns of someone not blessed with their own emotional freedom bringing revelation.  Why, because they haven’t truly sort the Holy Spirit and invited Him to take them on the journey of healing revelation they need. In short, they haven’t given God the time and space needed to repair the damage.  Typically, I find people who remain broken because they try to fix themselves by themselves.

Our Experience.

My wife Esther (Yes I got to marry the modern queen Esther) and my experience has been that when the reason for our emotional turbulence (and boy, did we have some seat belts on “discussions” when we first were married) are revealed by God it’s best to stay in His classroom, not skulk off on your own to do battle with your (many self-inflicted) demons in your own strength.  But we do, don’t we, God reveals our issues and we typically either ignore them or try to fix them in our closed minds.  Why because the very hurt we are trying to get closure on has created a need for control in our lives.  We have been hurt, often by controlling individuals, and we respond by trying to take control of our own healing instead of laying it all down at the feet of our loving heavenly father! (We are planning a with the Holy Spirit healing class for this, so stay connected to us via this website)

In conclusion it takes time to forgive your enemies, but as always when you do, God does more than you imagine He would.

Forgiveness brings the Fullness of joy!

First of all, you begin a journey to live life to the full, coming ever closer to Gods blueprint for your life in wholeness. Having truly forgiven your enemies you are able to treat them as God asks you to, i.e. truly love and pray for them.  Then and only then do they become a Godly footstool.  That’s not one of revenge or retribution but one of promotion.  God loves them too but often your enemies won’t receive His love, so they stay locked up in misery and attack people as a result.

Therefor God puts them to use as an emotional footstool for those that know Him.  Their forgiveness and love of their enemies allows them into a joyous place of (Esther 9:22) feasting, giving and receiving of presents, in other words Heaven.  Yes, you got it, forgiveness turns your enemies into a footstool to launch you from earth into Heaven.  (Luke 20:43 & acts 7:49)

“Isaiah 49:13 New International Version (NIV)

13 Shout for joy, you heavens;

    rejoice, you earth;

    burst into song, you mountains!

For the Lord comforts his people

    and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.”

Notice in this verse from Isaiah the bible doesn’t discriminate between heaven and earth.  Contrary to the look on many peoples faces you don’t have to wait until you die and go to heaven to experience joy.  You just need to defeat your enemy’s hatred with love God’s love!  Try it!  You might not just be surprised by how it changes your life through joy, but also by how they change.

“Luke 10:21 New International Version (NIV)

21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.”

God’s strength not ours!

Again, we can’t do this in our own strength.  Notice here in Luke even Jesus relies on The Holy Spirit for Joy, and in my experience Holy Spirit joy can look a little strange, so as God reveals joy to you “His little children” be childlike, let go of your inhibitions, surrender to the Father, Son and Holy Ghost and LET GO OF YOUR HURTS! YOU WILL EXPERIENCE HEAVENLY JOY ON EARTH!
